GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

We assisted the National Park Service with a long-range management plan for Gateway National Recreation Area (NRA). Gateway is located in New York City (and Jersey), making it a unique, urban national park and one that presents an amazing opportunity to connect urban kids with nature. We worked closely with the NPS to strategize solutions for promoting Gateway and developing introductory opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The project focused on improving Gateway as a venue where urban residents can connect with nature and enjoy outdoor recreation. The Root House team’s planning concept included an urban farm, a variety of camping facilities, nature and adventure play elements and many educational, skill-building and outreach programs designed for urban youth.
